History of Sóller Town Center: Explore Plaça Constitució
In the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana lies a place with a soul of its own: the town center of Sóller. Strolling through its cobbled streets is more than just admiring beautiful façades; it’s walking through centuries of history and experiencing the essence of a town that has always welcomed the world without losing its authenticity.
A fertile valley with a citrus flavor
Since ancient times, the valley of Sóller has been a privileged spot thanks to its water and fertile soil. Here grew the famous orange and lemon trees, whose export to France brought life and prosperity to the town square. This constant exchange shaped the open and cosmopolitan character of its people.
Modernism in the square
The fruits of that wealth can still be admired in the historic center. The Church of Sant Bartomeu, with its spectacular modernist façade, dominates Plaça Constitució, while the elegant Bank of Sóller building recalls the importance of the citrus trade. Around them, stately homes and small cafés invite you to pause and enjoy the atmosphere.
Trains, trams and tradition
The Sóller train, inaugurated in 1912, was a true revolution: it connected the valley with Palma through mountains and tunnels, opening this beautiful corner of Mallorca to the world. Shortly after came the tram, which still runs through the streets to the Port of Sóller.
But the soul of the town is not only found in its architecture. Every May, during Es Firó, the square relives the legendary defense against Turkish corsairs in 1561, a celebration filled with music, color and emotion.
Today: living history among cafés and terraces
Today, Sóller’s town center remains a lively meeting place. Plaça Constitució, with its terraces under the shade of trees and the gentle murmur of the fountain, is the perfect spot to sip a coffee, taste a local ensaïmada, or simply watch life unfold around you.
Visiting the center of Sóller is much more than discovering a Mallorcan town: it’s immersing yourself in the history, culture and beauty of a place that has never lost its essence.
